CS Climate Jobs Fair!

Published 9 months ago • 3 min read

Hi Reader,

Well, it’s #backtoschool season - even for us grown-ups! Time to sharpen those pencils, stack those fresh notebooks, and focus up 🤓 If you’ve been wanting to pivot your career towards solving the climate crisis - either by transitioning fields or becoming a climate advocate right where you are - we’ve got some awesome events coming up for you.

We spend a huge amount of our lives working. The average American spends about 90,000 hours working over the course of their lives, and because of many factors including extreme economic inequality and workaholic culture, many people will spend much more than that. In a time when the survival and thriving of life on Earth is under immediate threat, we need those hours working towards solving the climate crisis.

But how do we get there? Whether you’re looking to pivot careers or create change in your current role - we’ve got support, tools, and frameworks to help you!

Crowdsourcing Sustainability Climate Jobs Fair

September 5-7th

Tuesday 9/5

Climate At Work: How to Be A Climate Advocate Right Where You Are
1:30 PM EDT

Have you ever wanted to use your job to help solve the climate crisis, but thought it was impossible or didn't know where to start? Because the climate crisis touches every aspect of our lives, every job can and must be a “climate job”. Not everyone can or wants to pivot their entire career into the “climate industry”, and we don’t want them to. We need climate advocates in every realm and sector of our economy - from sanitation workers to bartenders to HR managers to financial advisors. We all have a role to play in solving this crisis no matter what we do to pay the bills.
This panel will explore how you can make your job a “climate job” from right where you are. These experts will explore frameworks and tools for thinking about how your job intersects with climate, how to democratize the climate conversation at work, and how to skillfully engage with the obstacles you may encounter along the way.
If you would like to brainstorm actions specific to your current job or role after this workshop, Melissa will stay for 30 minutes after the discussion to support that process for participants. You can come away with clear actions to begin your process!

Wednesday 9/6

How to Design A Fulfilling Climate Career
12pm EDT

You know you want to have an impactful climate career. But how do you achieve that? Whatever your educational background, skill set, or previous industry, there are valuable ways for you to help address climate change. This interactive workshop will help you develop a fresh perspective about what’s possible. Learn how you can tap into your strengths to create a fulfilling career. Bring your questions, get ready to write down your ideas, and come away with greater clarity and empowerment to pursue your unique climate career path.

Thursday 9/7

Your Climate Career Story: Communicating to Find Your Meaningful Role
1 pm EDT

Are you struggling to connect the dots between your career and your passion for climate action? In this workshop, Rachel offers tools for framing your personal climate story in terms of your professional goals. As a story strategist and creator of Eco-Anxious Stories, Rachel works with people to identify what is meaningful, and she helps come up with effective ways to communicate that message to others. Join this workshop and learn about how to find your fit in the climate landscape, how to tell your climate story to a prospective employer, and how to advance climate conversations at work.

This will be one of our final events for the Crowdsourcing Sustainability Community and we hope it will provide you with the resources and support you need to find a fulfilling and impactful way to use your work to help solve the climate crisis. You are needed. And no matter what you do to pay the bills you can be part of solving the climate crisis. Plus, if you’re going to spend 90,000 hours of your precious life working, it’s really important to like your job! We hope these events will help you get there, wherever “there” is for you.

See you soon!

Hi Reader,One of the most effective yet overlooked levers that each of us can pull to accelerate climate solutions is being active citizens at the local level. This is where your vote and advocacy have the most weight. It’s the level of government where things can be done the quickest. Local policy and investment decisions have the potential to reduce a significant amount of emissions (e.g. roughly 35% of emissions in California). And perhaps most importantly, it’s where the majority of your...
